I read the article earlier today. I found the criticisms of the character of Sam being deaf as opposed to having some other disorder like down syndrome that would classify him as chattle to be a little strange. I think that Sam being deaf makes the story more interesting because it demonstrates the way that humans assign value to specific life forms.
