This is an article about those underwater wind turbines I mentioned so enthusiastically in class yesterday.

How do literary interpretations of land, both to the inclusion and exclusion of the human, inform our understanding of nature? How might such literary presentations define concepts like “wilderness,” “refuge,” and “environment”? What might this suggest about our impact on the spaces designated as a result of these concepts (e.g. National Parks, Wetlands, Nature Preserves)? Focusing primarily on American environmental writings, from the Transcendentalists of Emerson and Thoreau through the naturalist reflections of Muir and Leopold to the journalistic accounts of Edward Abbey, Mike Tidwell, and Jill Fredston, this blog explores how we negotiate our relationship with the natural world (and what this means)—and how, perhaps, these negotiations dictate a particular ethics of approach that can transform concepts into actions.
